What is a Death Doula?

A death doula is a support person, who provides nonjudgmental, non-medical, holistic support to those nearing the end of life. We also offer support to the friends and family of the elderly, dying, or recently deceased. A death doula educates and empowers individuals to make decisions on their own end-of-life care and final burial or funeral.
A death doula may also provide physical support. For example, a death doula may offer healing touch; like holding a person’s hand, gentle massage, and physical care needs that are often left for families to provide; keeping the dying individual clean, dry, and comfortable. Death doula support is holistic.

creating & conducting funerals

Funerals can be performed while you or your loved one is still living, or as a post death memorial. This is a beautiful way to acknowledge, celebrate and honour the life of a loved one who has passed away. A funeral can bring comfort and peace to those who mourn and bring people together to share in the sorrow of loss and the joy of having known someone.

Post Death Funeral

Home Funerals

A home funeral is what used to be called “a funeral” since all funerals took place in the family home. Nowadays it means choosing to keep a body at home after death, as opposed to having the body immediately picked up by a funeral home. It is a safe and legal choice for a family to make

Living Funeral

Home Living Funerals

A living funeral gives your client the chance to be there when their family and friends are actively remembering and reminiscing about the client’s life. Sometimes also known as a pre-funeral or living wake, it moves the celebration of a person’s life from after death to before death, so the celebrated person can be there to cry, laugh, and enjoy the memorial held in their honour. Living funerals can also help families and the terminally ill come to terms with the upcoming death and recognize a good life lived. Living funerals may also be held for those who are healthy and well. They are not exclusively for the terminally ill. In this context, they can help people consider their own mortality and the kind of legacy they want to leave behind before they leave this world.

Other End of Life Services

Celebration of Life

A celebration of life is a great way to pay tribute to a loved one and celebrate their legacy. Unlike most funerals that often share similar prayers and readings; a celebration of life is unique to the individual.

While it is important to celebrate the life of the deceased, you need to remember that the event is not for them. Its main purpose is to allow the family to say goodbye, give them closure, and begin the healing process.

Planning & Conducting vigils

Planning a vigil is an "active death" service, provided by Randi. However, the degree to which the she is actively involved can vary significantly, based on the needs of the dying individual and family. Just like a birth doula sits with an actively labouring woman and provides comfort, support, and advocacy, Randi does the same—but for the active dying phase. Frequently, because the active dying phase can take place over a number of days, Randi may offer this with a partner.
